Settings: It took place at the Oriental Plaza in Johannesburg, a shopping center run by Indians.
Main character: Mrs Nebo
She was a wife to Mr. Clive Nebo who is designed as the Foreign Minister in the new government. She had a medium height. Heavy loins and a smoothed-skinned complexion can also be a describtion of her. Her good friend was Margaret, whom she goes shopping with. Mrs Nebo had a lot of money and usually pays by cheques. Having to be an impotant man's wife, she believed that evrybody had to respect her.
Plot
The Silk Scarf, a short story by Armed Essop talks about a rich lady Mrs. Nebo in an Indian run shopping center. She went there to buy her clothings with a friend, Margaret. Mrs Nebo was rich as she was a wife of a man to be the foreign Minister in the new government. She could afford anything.One of the dresses she bought needed a matching scarf. She strolled around the center and at last came across a scarf that matched her dress. She took it and just realised she did not have enuogh money to pay for it. She only had a cheque but the man selling it does not accept cheques. Her friend told the seller that he should realise that he was talking to an important person. The seller told them that it was a rule he set and it applied to all people. This led into an argument and Mrs. Nebo took it as disrespect. The other Indians selling there were afraid of being chased out due to this. They tried convincing him but he didnt want. So they bought it for her.
